Scaling Weblin to Web Scale: Application for the NGI Zero Commons Fund
It is our mission to make the Web a vibrant space where people meet and interact, and live.

We believe that by turning all web pages into meeting places where people do text and video chat, websites and webpages of the Internet become public streets and squares. This democratizes communication enabling people to “reclaim the web” for them.

To achieve that, our browser extension makes people aware of each other as avatars if they happen to be on the same web page at the same time.

Our solid prototype is already available at the Chrome Web Store. In the next step we want to achieve Web scale. We aim to be able to handle one million users practically with an architecture that can handle billions in theory.

Our mission and technology is a perfect match for the NGI Zero Commons Fund of the Nlnet Foundation. They support organisations and people who contribute to an open internet for all by funding projects that help fix the internet through open hardware, open software, open standards, open science and open data. Especially with the NGI Zero Commons Fund, which goal is to help deliver, mature and scale new internet commons to reclaim the public nature of the internet and yield the full benefits from technology as a society. With weblin.io we can help to achieve this important mission.

We want to apply for funding for the NGI Zero Commons Fund. With their support we can reach Web scale. Until now the project has been privately funded by donations from project members. With the help of funding, we can develop important features focusing the scalability aspect (features are listed in detail in the next blog article).

In the meantime, we welcome any additional support. Advice, feedback and of course new users of the weblin.io browser extension.
